Why is the liver so important?

The Importance of Liver Health

October 12, 20232 min read

A very important bodily organ to take care of is your liver. If you’re overweight or you eat a lot of fatty foods, your liver could become enlarged. Think of your liver as a processing area for all the toxins in your body. Once your liver removes the things that aren't good for you, it sends essential nutrients to other areas of your body. Metabolism is the process that takes place in your liver, and if there are issues pertaining to this vital organ, your metabolism could be slowed. Here at Naples Vitality, we invite you to learn more about why liver health is so important.

Your liver helps to keep you energized during the day. This is done by sending glucose and other nutrients to areas of your body that need it at the time, storing others until they are needed. Fats are also processed in your liver. However, if you consume too much fat, it can be overwhelming to this organ. When toxins enter your body, your liver works to filter them out. A prime example would be alcohol; once alcohol is detected, your liver begins the process of making sure it's filtered from your body. Cirrhosis of your liver can occur if you continue to consume alcohol over long periods of time.

There are a few ways you can maintain your liver health. For one, we advise you to maintain a healthy weight. A fatty liver can quickly result in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. After having tests performed and determining that your liver is enlarged because you're overweight, your doctor might suggest that you lose weight so this organ can decrease in size. Make sure you eat plenty of the right foods with a variety of vitamins and minerals instead of those with high levels of sugar and carbohydrates. Fiber is good to consume along with calcium and whole grains.

In order to protect your liver and its importance to your body, try not to introduce toxins, such as alcohol. Avoid sharing hygiene items, especially those that could come in contact with blood. If you're exposed to any amount of blood from another person, follow up with your doctor to determine if there are any issues that result from the contact.
